WELCOME to Lettys, the touch-typing aid! "What does Lettys do?" you ask? Well, basically, it gives you semi-random letters and symbols to type. If you type the right one, then it gives you another. Simple? That's it? No. Read on...
Lettys LEARNS!!!
------------------
David McWherter Enterprises is proud to present it's first learning program! How does Lettys learn exactly? Well, it analyzes what you type. Then, any letters that you make mistakes on, there's a higher probability that you'll get that letter real soon. Trouble keys in typing can show up on average of every other letter, so you're forced to learn how to hit those trouble keys.
What you need to run Lettys
------------------
RAM:
• I've configured it to only need 200K of RAM, but I'm not sure how well that adjustment has been made. It should be absolutely safe there, but there's a sliver of a chance it could crash. If you have any problems, let me know and adjust your memory partition for Lettys higher. If you want to save RAM and you feel brave, lower the partition. If Lettys crashes your system or beeps several times and quits, it may need more memory.
COLOR:
• Color helps, but isn't needed. The only problem you'll run across is with "Brainwashing the Neural Net." You just have to remember, "Yes, go ahead and brainwash is in the lower-right hand corner" and "NO! Don't brainwash!" is in the lower left hand corner. Just remember to click to the left edge of the window if you wish to brainwash the net.
COLOR QUICKDRAW:
• I believe that it is necessary, because I use some color quickdraw calls.
SYSTEM:
It should work on System 6, but I have not tested it on it (I do not know of anyone with System 6 anymore, if you have it, and would like to be a SPECIAL David McWherter Enterprises Beta tester!, just email me and let me know.).
POWERMAC:
• Should run fine in emulation mode, but is not native. I really don't think I should port it to PowerMac, because it uses practically no processor power to run. If you feel that you need a PowerMac version, I'll see what I can do.
How to Use Lettys
------------------
1) Open up the Lettys application.
--If you are not registered, then:
•You will get an annoying startup delay (1 sec) where you're told to register Lettys. Registered versions open immediately.
•Learning data will not be saved when Lettys quits.
•Settings will not be saved when Lettys quits.
•Lettys will only give the "home" keys on a standard American keyboard.
2) Register so you aren't massively annoyed by the time-limit and startup delay. To register, select "Register..." from the Apple-menu. Type in the password that you got from sending me the registration fee and then click on the "Click here to register" button. (OK, the human interface design isn't the greatest here, but you'll probably only come here once if you use this program properly.) For more info on registering, look at the end of this file.
3) Type the letters that pop up on the screen. Go quickly to increase your speed, slowly to learn to find the keys. Try not to look at the keyboard when you run Lettys, you will improve more quickly.
4) If you get stuck on a letter and don't feel like looking for it or whatever, just select the "Do It For Me" command in the File menu. I made the command-key for this the tilde (~) key, because most keyboard layouts don't move it around.
OPTIONS MENU
------------------
Sound - Switches between using a beep or a flash to tell you that you've made a typing error.
Report - Tells you what the percentage of times that you mistyped the current letter is. If you really screwed up on the current letter, this number can be quite large. This feature can be used to help you decide if you want to brainwash the neural net or not and also if you just want to see your progress.
Brainwash - Erases all learning data. If you're in black and white mode, you can't make out the buttons on the brainwashing window that pops up after selecting brainwash, so Click in the lower-right to brainwash and in the lower-left to cancel.
Bugs
------------------
Lettys should only display the following characters in the main Lettys window:
A through Z (capital)
; <semicolon>
. <period>
, <comma>
/ <slash>
If Lettys displays a character other than those mentioned above, you found a bug, and you should report it to David McWherter Enterprises (address is at the end of this file).
IMPORTANT/LEGAL
------------------
If anyone wants to distribute Lettys in any way in which a person other than a close family member (a person who has the same postal address as and lives for 6 (six) months of the year at the same residence) then the copy of Lettys MUST be unregistered and MUST be distributed WITHOUT the registration code being given IN NO WAY to the recipient. Also, ALL accompanying documentation MUST be included with the copy of Lettys. Giving the registration code to or giving a registered copy to another person in any method, or distributing Lettys without its accompanying documentation, or modifying Lettys in any way will result in LEGAL ACTION taken by David McWherter Enterprises.
If anyone would like to distribute Lettys on their CD-ROMs MUST send David McWherter Enterprises a copy of the media to verify the integrity of Lettys BEFORE the CD-ROMs are distributed to ANYONE. ONLY if David McWherter Enterprises approves of the copy of Lettys being on the CD-ROM can the CD-ROMs be distributed. If there is a special circumstance in which this cannot be done, contact MUST be made with David McWherter Enterprises before hand and distribution MUST wait until approval of the copy of Lettys being on the CD-ROM is given by David McWherter Enterprises. In summary, approval MUST be given by David McWherter Enterprises before CD-ROMS carrying Lettys can be shipped in any circumstance, or LEGAL ACTION will be taken by David McWherter Enterprises against the publisher of the CD-ROMs.
Finally, David McWherter Enterprises and David McWherter himself are not responsible for any damage which David McWherter Enterprises or David McWherter's software may do to computer, data, or anything else. Use David McWherter Enterprises software at your OWN risk.
Obtaining Special Copies
------------------
To obtain a copy of the newest version of Lettys, just send $8 (US currency) to David McWherter Enterprises (the address is at the end of this file) along with an enclosed, self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). David McWherter Enterprises will then mail you your registration password and a Macintosh Disk with the latest version Lettys on it. You will automatically be registered in this case (See registration, below.)
REGISTRATION
------------------
It is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to register Lettys if you use it for more than one day. If you do not comply to that term, and the ones litsed above in the IMPORTANT/LEGAL section of this document, do not use Lettys. It's that simple. Registering allows the use of Lettys on ONE computer by ONLY the person who registers and close family members of that person. A close family member is ONLY defined in this case as: a person who has the same postal address as and lives for at least 6 (six) months of the year at the same residence as the person who registered. For anyone who wants to make special arrangements for registering many copys of Lettys at businesses, universities, colleges, etc., contact David McWherter Enterprises.
To register Lettys, send $7 (US currency) and either your email or postal address to David McWherter Enterprises. David McWherter Enterprises postal address is at the very end of this file.
YOUR EMAIL OR POSTAL ADDRESS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! Do not leave it out! It is the only way that you can recieve the registration password. Put your address somewhere on the INSIDE of the envelope that you send us.
